The fact that it’s a small lathe doesn’t mean that it’s low on features or power though.

The Rikon Mini Lathe has a 12 inch swing and 16 inches between centers as standard so it’ll cope with a fair sized piece of woodturning. If you want greater turning length later on, you can just add more bed bars.

The 1/2 hp motor gives plenty of power to a six speed gearbox so it might be a mini lathe but it’s got maxi capabilities!

Here’s a helpful video overview of the Rikon Mini Lathe:

If you’re in the market, you can pick up a Rikon Mini Lathe for around $329 at Woodcraft. In addition, Woodcraft also carries Rikon Lathe Stands, as well as bed extensions and other helpful accessories.

In their own words, Maker Faire is a two-day, family-friendly event that celebrates arts, crafts, engineering, science projects and the Do-It-Yourself (DIY) mindset. Want to see robots, rockets, a catapult competition, even a life-sized mousetrap?
Something for everyone then – woodworkers included!

Of special interest to woodworkers will be Fox Chapel Publishing who will be on-hand celebrating the fun of woodworking by racing pinewood derby cars down a 40-foot track with Troy Thorne, author of Pinewood Derby Designs & Patterns, turning bowls with the help of the Central Texas Woodturners Association, building mousetrap-powered racers with our new author, Doc Fizzix, and spitting wood chips from our whittling and carving projects. We’ll also have on display our famous Wooden Gear Clock and challenging Cryptex Puzzle Vault — both recent cover projects from Scroll Saw Woodworking & Crafts.

Tickets for Maker Faire Austin available online or at the Austin Children’s Museum!
