New Tools:

The No. 48 Tongue & Groove Plane will soon be joined by a smaller version, which will center on ½” stock.  Planned to be shipping by the end of August.

Late August should also bring a new Drawknife into production. The drawknife will be made from O-1 Tool Steel with Maple handles and is based on a favorite Whiterby.

The Rikon Mini Lathe could be just the thing you’re looking for if you’re thinking of starting wood turning or your a bit short of space. The fact that it’s a small lathe doesn’t mean that it’s low on features or power though.

The Rikon Mini Lathe has a 12 inch swing and 16 inches between centers as standard so it’ll cope with a fair sized piece of woodturning. If you want greater turning length later on, you can just add more bed bars.

The 1/2 hp motor gives plenty of power to a six speed gearbox so it might be a mini lathe but it’s got maxi capabilities!

Pen making is very popular with woodworkers, and why wouldn’t it be? You have an almost infinite variety of patterns available from both wooden pen blanks and acrylics. You can design and make classic pens or produce radical designs of your own.

A lathe, a pen mandrel, pen kit and a blank and you’re away. It can also be quite a profitable hobby as pens and pencils are always popular at craft show and as gifts for friends and family.

There are lots of ways of joining two pieces of wood but a sign of true craftsmanship is using dovetails.

A beautifully cut dovetail is a joy to see – but doing it by hand, while very satisfying, is also very difficult and time consuming.

So if you want the visual appeal, but you don’t want it to take you all day, you need a dovetail jig, and this one, from Woodriver, is currently on sale at Woodcraft at a saving of $10.00.

You’ll need  a 1/2 inch dovetail bit for your router, and a 5/8 inch template guide bushing as well, which aren’t included, but it’s still quite a bargain.

You want an accurate digital clock movement? You’ve got to get yourself some of these – accurate to half a second every million years!

Times are tough so any saving that you can make on your woodwork tools have got to be a good thing, right?
