Basic clock making is a pretty straight-forward process. You need something for a clock face (you can pretty much design what you like), some numbers (or dots, or buttons or whatever…) and a cheap quartz clock movement for around $5 or $6. Job done. Easy to make, very profitable to sell at craft shows and such.
However, difficulties can arise if you want to do something different with the clock hands. There’s a limit to the amount of torque a standard mini-quartz movement produces.
The answer, of course, is a high torque quartz movement like these currently on special offer from Clockparts, who claim that this clock will happily cope with hands of up to 35 inches length – that’ll make you one BIG wall clock!
I guess, of course, that they’re referring to a plastic hand. If you were custom-building hands from other materials you’ll need to test how big you can go.
As these quality high torque clock movements are only $10.95 each, that’s not going to break the bank. What’s more, if you make a few clocks it could be worth you taking advantage of the buy-five-get-one-free offer.
As usual, the offer is only good while stocks last, so get over there now: Clockparts High Torque Quartz Clock Movements.

Hi Joseph
This is just a news site – we don’t sell the movements. You’ll need to ask Clockparts. You can click the advert top right of the screen to get their site where you can ask them. I believe they have a large clock movement that will do the job but you had better check.
Regards
Bob
I require 10 x high torque quartz battery operated movements able to turn a minute hand 30cm (approx 12 inches). Hi Beverley
This is just a news site for woodworkers. We don’t supply anything, just keep people up to date with what’s happening. For clock movements I’d suggest you contact Clockparts – just click that ad over on tth top right to visit them.
Jerry,
You stated that some of the high torque movements can support hands up to 35 inch in length, do you have a link or model number to one of these movements? So far I have not been able to find any that can support hands this long. I am trying to build a large clock (about 59 inch diameter) so the hands are big.
Thanks
